What Is A Wind Mitigation Inspection?

Wind mitigation is the implementation of certain building techniques in order to limit damage caused by intense winds.  Therefore, this insurance related inspection looks at key areas of your roof to determine its ability to withstand strong winds and water intrusion.  Your roof is the first line of defense against heavy winds. Consequently, a wind-mit inspection focuses on your roof.

What is included in a Wind Mitigation Inspection?

BVA Gome Inspections look for specific factors that would make it more resistant to heavy winds or hurricanes.  During the inspection, a Florida certified inspector will examine the following safety features:

  • Roof Geometry – Hip Roof, Flat Roof, Other – Hip roof definitely qualifies for a discount.
  • Roof Deck Attachment – We will determine the thickness of the sheathing, the rafter spacing, the nail size and nail spacing of the nails attaching the sheathing to the rafters.
  • Roof Coverings  – We will determine as part of the wind mitigation inspection the type of roof covering(s) and the age of the roof. We will attach any permits associated with the roof.
  • Roof-to-Wall Attachment – Clips, wraps, toe nails and structural bolts are types of possible attachments.
  • Secondary Water Resistance – SWR (also called Sealed Roof Deck) Self-adhering polymer modified-bitumen roofing underlayment applied directly to the sheathing or foam adhesive SWR barrier (not foamed-on insulation) applied as a supplemental means to protect the dwelling from water intrusion in the event of roof covering loss.
  • Protection of openings – We will also determine the level of protection from wind of doors, windows, garage doors and any other openings and include in the wind mitigation report.

Insurance discounts are determined by how your home is designed with these features.

How Much Does A Wind Mitigation Inspection Cost?

Due to having the inspection performed, some client’s rates have dramatically dropped.  For that reason, our inspectors focus on the key characteristics in the home which qualify for wind discounts.  $75.00 is the average cost for the wind-mit inspection.  The amount paid for the inspection is usually reimbursed within a month or two of premium insurance savings.  It takes about a half hour to an hour on site, based on the size of the property.
